Best wireless settings with DD-WRT on a Buffalo WHR-HP-54G?

Best?

There is No best, the setting is for functional configuration, and you set it according to what you want to do with it?

if you want to use it as a regular Wireless just change the Device Name the SSID name, and choose the best channel.

I'm running the dd-wrt firmware...there's a good selection of options I can change for my router. There are lots of suggestions as to "good" settings for the router, so I'm trying to figure out what works best for most, because I've seen different reports on it. I'm just trying to see what people recommend.

I don't have the exact same model buffalo, but most of the defaults are working fine for me.

The defaults are about the same as the normal router firmware settings. Some people claim this dd-wrt firmware makes the router a lot better, so I'm really trying to figure out what they did to do that.

You haven't defined the term better. Better how? You can boost the signal strength, but be careful you don't burn the thing up. You can client mode (the reason I bought the thing and flashed it). It all depends on your definition or better. 😉

The 3rd party firmware gives you options that are Not available with the default firmware.

It is Not a Video Card or CPU that your can Tweak.

The only Tweak is a boost in power to achieve more range; otherwise, it is features that are added to the device ( http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/What_is_%22DD-WRT%22%3F ).

Read the info on the DD-WRT web site may be you would find a feature that you always dreamed about and did know that it is here.

Short version.

You can stay with the Buffalo firmware.

As is, with the original Buffalo firmware, even without the Flashing, it is the best of the sub $100 Wireless Routers.

With the original firmware it can be secured at WPA-AES level, can do IP reservation, and even WDS.

You need to switch to 3rd party.

If you want to boost power.

Need Qos to control individual computers bandwidth.

Use WPA in Client Mode.

And other more advanced features, along the line of, VPN, RADIUS, etc.

I thought I made it clear that by better I mean boosting the signal, but without ######## things up. I also don't want a crappy signal, even if it goes farther.
