Question Best Wireless Router to Supplement Poor Uverse RG WiFi

The WiFi performance of my AT&T Uverse RG leaves a lot to be desired. Devices using the WiFi network do not work as reliably as I would expect and that includes everything from the AT&T wireless set top boxes, wifi connected TVs, a Nest thermostat, Ring Doorbell, etc. I want to turn off the RG's internal WiFi and use a very high quality high performing WiFi router fed from one of the RG's Ethernet ports. I live in a 1700 Ft2 town house and the RG is about centered but I still see a noticable signal drop in rooms farthest from the RG (worst case 55' and 4 walls). I also have everything that has 5GHz capability on 5GHz as the 2.4 GHz band is crowded from all my neighbors but the 5Ghz band appears reasonably uncrowded. The 2.4 GHz signal is slightly stronger but the uncrowded 5GHz band appears overall the better choice.

There are many wireless routers to choose from but choosing the optimum make/model is not at all obvious to me. I do not mind paying a premium for a device that will provide the best possible performance although I would like to avoid, if possible, the ones that over $400 or so. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't think the issues I perceive are primarily due to less than optimum signal although I think that is a contributor. It just does not seem the AT&T RG does a good job of reliably communicating with all the wireless devices I have asking for wifi service (thermostat, doorbell, printer, multiple iphones, multiple iPads, two wireless set top boxes, etc. etc,). I apologize if I implied weak signal was the major issue. My Nest thermostat, for example, is located with an arms length of the RG and it misses signals from my iPhone telling it to go into Eco mode when I am away from home. The wireless set top boxes will suddenly lose the signal from the central DVR. It just seems to me the AT&T WiFi implementation is just not as good as a high performing external wireless router might be.

Try to set wireless channel on the gateway to auto, not fixed at 1, 6, or 11 or other channels.
