If you're running ddwrt. just crank up transmit power. I have same router & my back room had 2 bars, cranked up transmit to 150 and now have 4 bars thru lathe & plaster..

What'd you crank it to? I read cranking it just adds more noise and can increase transmit and do more harm then good on these.

Keep the ancient router, get a pack of UniFi APs.

any reviews on them?

this guy looks pretty slick:

Check the threads, a lot of folks have had positive experiences. I've set them up as APs for myself and some friends and they're an excellent appliance: after a bit of setup on a PC (you don't need to keep the utility running unless you want a captive portal) you can just forget about it and enjoy the rock-solid coverage. Also the POE setup (injector included) lets you position them more or less wherever you like.

If you have multiple UniFi APs they handle client handoff on their own seamlessly.

Btw, the "long-range" version is overkill. Remember that the very lowest power setting on this is probably around/over the 150mw that the other guy "cranked" his router to.

"Stories" we always have".

Technology wise the sweet spot of most WRT54G with DD-WRT is 70mW.

OP "shorting down" your Folks and using terms that do not exists in Wireless Technology are Not going to provide you with a reasonable solution.

Blasting through "Plaster walls" is Not a Technical variable in WIFI.

Just build a the fasted Network that your money allow you to buy.

I have never heard shorting down, what does that mean Jack? I don't recall mentioning it either, haha.

Blasting through plaster walls is not technical at all, I don't think anyone reviews that, but it looks like smallnetwork does do range testing, and some reviewers state whether or not it helps through plaster/lathe walls as well.... maybe not technical, but a requirement of what I am trying to do.

Sorry Vivi.. The "stories" sections was addressed to the post claiming WRT54G running for 7 year while spitting out 150mW.
-------------

As for Reviews with distance. There is a reason why solid references to Distance can Not be found.

Responsible knowledgeable Reviewers know that WIFI distance is so environmentally dependent that it is Not valid unless One duplicates the Test environment. That will include topography, size, building materials, furniture (what they are made of, and how they are arranged in the rooms ), Appliances, the precise amount and vectors of all electronic noises, and more..

totally understand, I am going to see if I can't get one or two of those N66U's, as they seem to have some decent power behind them, albeit $120 a pop.
