Yes... wrong forum.. I know. I already posted it in Networking but that place is a ghost town. So, if anyone would be so kind... please chime in with your thoughts and opinions.

My Linksys WRT54G router died on me this morning after 2+ years of service. No power, nothing... just dead.

I need to buy a replacement today at a brick and mortar.

What I need:
At least wireless G capability (prefer 108 speeds but that's not a requirement)
At least 4 ports for wired computers
At least WEP and WPA encryption options.

Preferrably something that has a nice array of customizable features in the control panel.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

i have a Dlink i got at microcenter a few weeks ago wireless G + 4 wired, working flawlessely

cost like 60$

I have a SMC Barricade G (SMC2804WBR)..think I found it on FS/T a while back for ~$40. I like it 🙂

I dunno man, I'm scared of the WRT54G. I've killed a few, even trying to use the right firmware's for my version router. Sux. I really want to flash it, but I'm a pansy. Stupid Version 3.0. If you're not going to flash it, then there's plenty of other model's out there that do the same for the same price.

Thanks for all of the comments!

Back in 2003, I reviewed a few routers and felt the WRT54G was the best back then. I haven't kept up on things so I didn't know how the router market sat right now. I looked around a bit and was interested in the WRT54GS so that's probably what I'm off to buy...

Thanks!

For anyone else that may need a router: Circuit City has the Linksys WRT54GS for $90 with 2 $10 rebates... so $70 after rebates.

I'd have to say another Linksys too. I got a netgear, it's routing is ok but the wireless leaves a bit to be desired.

I have both Netgear and Linksys.

I have the Netgear SuperG 108mbps WGT624?? Is that it? Works really well.

I also have the Linksys WRT54GS that everyone is touting.

I find the Netgear to give better range.

Both have WPA and WEP. I think the Linksys has a SPI firewall also? NAT is just useless on both routers because you can spoof a packet easily using like 5yr old tools.

BTW, Super-G (108mbps) > Speedbooster technology, so keep that in mind. I like the Netgear since it's smaller, but my laptop has some problems with it (I think its my laptop). The router used to work flawlessly for like 6 months, but then one day when I came home from college and tried to game upstairs, the connection kept dying and I wuold have to reset the router to get my system to reconnect to the router. This has never happened with my Linksys on the other hand. However, I notice range is severely decreased on the Linksys.

Netgear WGT624 V2. Secure and fast on both wireless and hard wire. Updates flawlessly, excellent router. Trust me the 108 wireless always connects no less than 72 and my house is not big, medium size 2000 sq, and it connects well. Has everything you want and this is my second Netgear, my first was only hard wire, but both are very reliable. Netgear makes the best stuff in my opinion.
