I have to buy a router/WAP at best buy. I need max penetration/power in a home. Can spend up to 150 or so. Best options?

Everyone has a favorite brand, but I would check to see what Wireless N router has replaceable antennas. Then buy the best antenna upgrade you can afford.

Netgear WNDR3700... I have that and its awesome! Set encryption to WPA2 and connection speeds to 300Mbps on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz to maximize WiFi N speeds, signal strength, and connection... you will never reach 300Mbps because its only theoretical... only negative thing is you cannot manually set the channel widths to 40Mhz (doubles throughput speeds and is what you need to maximize WiFi N usage) on the 2.4GHz because its on auto... 5GHz is only 40Mhz. I use SAMBA and UPNP Shares for streaming video to media players and PCs and it works great! Retail price is $149.99

well really range is dependent on power output, and antenna choice.

You want something that is hackable to output more power (or commercial like an old ubiquity) and big honking antennas directional and/or omni's.

few rules apply here:
5GHZ takes twice the power output to penetrate the same range.
higher symbol rates are going to go shorter distances.
More antenna's may help with N
It matters what you are using in the client too

Folks shoot point to point at 1mbps symbol rate 802.11B for 100+ miles; they would never get that at N min speed with the same gear.

What is a analogy? What good is ferrari to drive 100mph on a bumpy dirt pot-hole ridden road?
