Best(?) Wireless HD

I'm thinking of getting a wireless HD to store common media for my family to access from different tablets, etc around the house and while traveling.

Devices are:

iPhone/iPad
Android Phone tablets
Samsung smart TV (can be finicky in HD navigation for media)
PCs (easiest).

It seems like the utility SW on the Seagate vs patriot vs other drives has quirks allowing seamless access to grab and play video.

Any experiences or preferences?

have you considered getting a network attached storage (NAS) that you connect to your network router, which may have wireless, and then any wifi device in your house can have access to the NAS via your existing wireless router?

or are you limiting this to just a stand-alone device with its own wireless broadcasting for your phone etc. to connect directly to, so that you could bring it camping and connect your phone to it while camping etc.?

I've thought about a NAS, and can simply plug a drive into my desktop PC that is on the Ethernet backbone. I was thinking of something I could take on trips with the kids to give them a server to extend the utility of their tablets in the minivan for the hours on the road. I tend to archive movies in MKV format before the kids scratch then to death, and the minivan's player doesn't support anything other than native DVDs.
