Best Wireless Controller For GameCube?

I know the WaveBird is good, but it's also pricey.

Are any of the alternatives decent?

WaveBird is the way to go. The only way there can be a better one is if Logitech made a GC version of their 2.4 GHz Cordless Action.

The 3rd party wireless controllers are no where in the same league in built quality as the Wavebird. It's worth the extra $10 for the Wavebird. And the Wavebird is rated for longer battery life than the 3rd party ones (even if you leave the rumble off)
