Doing an upgrade from W2K can work out fine, but just make sure all the software/drivers are compatible. But I agree the easiest way to goto Windows XP Professional is to fdisk, format, install, just backup your vital data first. 🙂
I did an upgrade from win98 and winme and encountered no problems, you should be fine. Check for hardware/software compatibily before installing to save you time and headache.
Actually, disagree with ketchupdog and agree with the rest. Clean install is always the best, because if problems arise you know it wasn't something that you inherited, or software issues.
*ALWAYS* clean install OSes. I'll say it again...*ALWAYS* clean install OSes. Upgrades are a joke. YOu should actually clean install your OS about every 12-14 months.....but NEVER, EVER upgrade an OS. Yuk. Blech. Avoid it like the plague.......Did I meantion you should *ALWAYS* clean install OSes?
i do it every 3-5 weeks!!! the Longest time w/o a format in the last 2 years is hmm.... a month. I'm starting to think i have too much time on my hands. lol
first of all you dont have to clean install os's every <insert specified time>.. if you do it right the first time.(cleanly).. i know it has plauged win9x kernel w/ slowing down and all and i also used to install that os ..over and over and over... however i've never had a problem w/ windows nt kernel... however if your registry gets messy for the slow down there are plenty of programs that clean that out for you.... i dont seem to reinstall my linux os every 3 months.... i never reinstall it... 😛
update... well i've upgraded a few windows 9x machies (laptops) w/ winxp ... it seems that there are no problems.. as long as you clean up your non-w2k programs first...
Upgrading can definatly work alright. I know I upgraded my WinME install to XP, and everything was stable, although a bit slower. I think with XP an upgrade can go a lot smoother as long as you check for compatibility before and remove anything that wont be compatible. I think an upgrade is a good deal if you dont quite feel like reinstalling all your apps, then go clean when you have the time and patience
