I'm replacing 2 aging ACs in the house and need some suggestions - I'm looking for something relatively quiet (one will go in the nursery) and potent for the size. What brands should I look to? Frigidaire, GE, sharp, etc are in my budget, friedrich (2x more expensive than the competition!) is not.

Thanks!

P.s. I have a quirky smart ac and, smart features aside, it's too loud for me to get 2 more.

my last GE air conditioner lasted a good 8 years with no problems... only ever gave it up due to laziness (moved apartments, didn't feel like uninstalling it from the window)

I'll also say that I bought an LG last year and have been super happy with it so far.

Appreciate that, GE does seem like a good bet. how loud is the LG? I bought one years ago (like 10) that was as loud as a leaf blower, better these days?

Had Carrier that lasted 19 years, just the fan burned out and I couldn't get the part. Currently have an LG that's 6 years old, came with a 5 year warranty. The LG is very powerful, cools half the house.

As far as quiet? I've never heard a truly quiet window unit. I don't think you want it running in a room with a sleeping baby anyways, especially a "potent" one.

doesn't seem any louder than any other window unit, especially considering it cools our large living room/dining room/kitchen area.

Wouldn't worry about the brand.....

I would however recommend getting something with plastic parts vs Styrofoam.

Just make sure you clean it out every year or so, that's important (and even if you don't, that's ok too).

These things are dirt cheap and last a long time.

No such a thing as quiet unit though and nothing to worry about, babies sleep better then there is noise around vs quiet and pin drop wakes them up.

Read: baby will get used to the sound/will be just fine.

I've got 2 LG's one is 10+ and has tons of hours on it, runs like a champ, the other is only 2 yrs but very quiet, airflow to the left could be better though.

Well the SMALL one's are dirt-cheap, the 12K unit I paid $350 for.

As far as quiet goes I've had the best luck with Friedrich. Currently also have an LG that works very well and aside from a bit of buzzing from the cheap plastic vents is very quiet. (I believe LG is the OEM for low-end Friedrich btw)

Have also owned Sharp, GE and Panasonic/Quasar ... all held up pretty well but were all quite a bit louder, especially the GE.

I have 2 Danbys. One is around 5 years old and is 9000BTU and kind of loud. It has a remote. The second one is a 5000BTU unit that I was given for free. I haven't used it yet so I have no idea how good it is.

Darnit, I knew there was a reason Friedrich charged a premium. Thanks for the suggestion!

P.s. lack of noise is less for the baby and more so that we can hear the kids from our room. I suppose we can get a baby monitor (our last one screwed with our router so we tossed it)

I have an LG floor standing model. It's been great for the 5 years I've had it. I just wish I could get inside of it to clean the internals a bit.

I had a Panasonic AC that could turn a room into a mini-fridge. My dad's Carrier Window AC was the quietest.

I got a Delonghi portable AC and it works great. A bit loud but you shouldn't have that issue if you're using a window one.
