Hey guys, I have a couple of websites I need to make for organizations I am in, but I havent been coding for like 3 years, and when I do its usually Adobe Go Live.

I was wondering what some of the best editors out there are now? Both free and *ahem* not free.

Happy new years to yall!

I call shens on this generic response. You mean you like gross wastes of your time? Sure, it's nice to have notepad to make general small touch ups if need be, but to hard code and entire web site? I think not.

That said, I'm a Dreamweaver user myself.

It does depend on a number of factors (your chosen development language, the operating system you are making use of, etc). First, check the appropriate section in this thread.

As it isn't listed in the above thread, if you're planning to make use of any sort of .NET solution, you might try Web Matrix, or the free Web Development version of Visual Studio Express.

I can hard-code with notepad. Sure, it's not fun sometimes, but it gets the job done.

I'm a professional web developer for a design firm, and I hand code ALL of my HTML. I don't use Notepad though because it doesn't support syntax highlighting or Unix line breaks, but I don't use WYSIWYG editors. We make websites for very high profile companies like Disney and Yahoo, and we always handcode our pages. Dreamweaver, as good as it is, can still screw up your code and doesn't work perfectly with custom, dynamic sites. I prefer Top Style as my code editor.

using Dreamweaver and PHP Designer 2005 on Windows, BBEdit on Mac. All I really demand is colorized tags and a tree-type file browser I can plop next the main window (though bbedit doesn't have this :().
