A bear will go for 100 yards or more after a perfect shot with a slug from a 12 gauge shotgun. If that bear is charging you, you're not likely to hit it until it's within 100 yards. And, if that bear is charging you, you're not likely to get that perfect shot. Shoot a charging bear in the head with a 12 gauge slug, and it's fairly likely to ricochet & not kill the bear.

HOWEVER, if people look at my 2nd link, you'll see that there are explosive grenade rounds for shotguns. The AA12 holds up to 32 shots (or more??) at a time, and another 32 shots can be put in within a couple seconds.

Interesting, let's say that we were using the AA12 and slugs not explosive rounds, that would sort out a bear no?

I don't think a grizzly would be laughing if you shot it in the face with a 12 gauge.

Buckshot wouldn't stand a chance.

If you can tag a charging grizzly in the skull with a slug at a couple dozen feet my hat would indeed be off to you.

But shotgun slugs take down deathclaws better than anything in the post-nuclear apocolypse!

Look at the shape of the skull. It's not going to penetrate the skull & kill the grizzly unless you hit low & it gets the spine.

edit: and yes, Hal, people hunt bears with shotguns/slugs around here all the time. Black bears; no browns anywhere near here.

It probably would have dazed it enough for the human to run off.

That bear will not move hit with a Brenneke Black Magic Magnum Slug. No ricochet either because slug is hard cast lead and heat treated to rip through bone and skull.

Hell they put a bear on the cover it's whats it made for

Unless one subscribes to the CS Lewis version of the apocalypse, bears shouldn't be a problem. And if one does hold to the CS Lewis version and thinks bears might be of concern, I suggest one is on the wrong side.

Isn't buckshot called buckshot because its meant to kill bucks? I don't see how a bear would shrug off 00 buckshot, not that id want to be close enough to use it anyways.

problem with guns is that you will run out of ammo.

problem with katana is that , as seen on hsn, it will break and stab you in the stomach.

I would say learn some kendo or how to use knife.

or learn how to run real fast real long.

Hand to hand or knife is terrible with zombies. Too close and all they need to do is take one bite and you're f'd.

Best weapon would be isolation.

Being in a very remote mountainous area with a sniper rifle is safer than having any number of weapons in a city or suburb.

If you are in a zombie situation in a city, I would say a combat shotgun and/or katana, but ideally those would be used only to defend yourself while finding a way to get out of the city as fast as possible. You don't want to bunker down in a city.
