best ways to sell a used car

my friend asked me to help her find the best method of selling a used car for the maximum amount of money returned. does anybody have any suggestions? any online sites or sites where i may read about methods? the car is in great condition, milage is under par, and has a clear title. she is planning to get another car after selling it. would it be better to trade in? any advice or suggestion is greatly appreciated.

You will get less trading it in. When I had to sell my truck I put it out in the front yard with a sign at 1pm, it was sold by 3pm for the price I was asking.

Private sale will probably generate the most money. Have it detailed and fix any minor problems like broken plastic pieces or anything a potential buyer would notice and pick at.

Really it depends on the car. I would suggest private sale with a high asking price and take as many offers as possible before selling. Of course there are idiots on ebay paying way too much.

Trade in would be the least amount of hassle, however she won't get as much $ for it.

Sell it to another private party.

I recommend listing it in your local newspaper's online classifieds. Some even offer pictures on their web site (for an additional fee of course).

When we sold our 1994 Toyota Corolla I must have received at least 25 calls in the first weekend. Yes I know the newspaper is "low tech" but it's cheap and efficient. Not everyone has access to the internet or knows to visit autotrader.com

What's your local largest newspaper?

Best way is to park it at a busy intersection with a For Sale sign.

When we were selling a car a couple years ago we put an ad in the paper, and put something online. Might have also put up a flier at a grocery store or 2. Never got more than 1 or 2 calls. Then my wife took it to work and parked it on the street in front of her office. We got at least one call every day.
