I'd like to learn to speak/write in French, currently using American English, and was wondering if there is any GOOD home books/programs/aids to accomplishing this goal. It would be nice to not have to spend 4 years in school to get a rounded usage of the language.

Why not? Almost every university has a foreign study programme don't they? Mine did anyway - you could study for a year in France as part of almost every course. As long as you don't hang out with English speakers the whole time you'll speak pretty good French by the time you get back. You can learn how to read/write a language from a book but you can only learn and get the confidence to speak it by living in the country

I know of people who have had good success with the Pimsleur CDs/tapes. They're quite expensive, but there's a chance you can find them cheaper *cough*PM me*cough*. Also I can highly recommend the "Learn to Speak" software line. You can find this software at Best Buy, CompUSA, etc. for around $40. The Pimsleur stuff you should buy on eBay or Amazon. A friend of mine made a good chunk of change buying and selling these sets... buying from an Amazon zStore and selling on eBay for a higher price.

I think it's better to learn french with a teacher or a book first.
Moving in France is a good way to improve your french but you need to have some basis.
It could be good too to speak with french people via ICQ or messenger for exemple.

I think you could find some help here

Don't listen lowtech and ChefJoe, french girls are only for french men :D

But never forget that : DON'T LEARN FRENCH WITH PEOPLE FROM QUEBEC !!! Their accent is so ridiculous :D
