Transfer a whole bunch of files and folders from 1 server that is being removed, to a new server which will replace it with the same name in the network, and save the permissions on the files and folders. Is there a way to transfer thru the network with some kind of file replication, or tape backup and restore? I guess I will also have to set up the exact same shares as well. OS is NT 4 server sp6. I don't want to have to recreate the permissions on 1000s of files and go around and change everyone's shortcuts on their desktops. Looking for the best way to do this.
Thanx!

How about just exchanging the disk(s), or adding the old disk into the new server?

Nope, the old server is 2 7gb old scsi drives raid 0, new one is 3 36gb scsi raid 5. Old server is a PII 350mhz, 512 pc133, new one is 1.13 PIII 640 pc133. Have to be copied over, swapping drives just wont work. CAn I ghost the old D drive (where all files are) and install image to new d drive? Will that keep everything the way it should be?

With the tape drive you can backup then restore the data on the new server. Most backup software has an option to retain permissions on restore.
