the most effective way other than the machine

(the one you sit on and bring your bent legs together)

I want to improve my lower body aesthetics

Without using a machine? Have any free weights that you can maybe lash to your ankles?

Side sprints might help for conditioning - turn your body sideways (kinda like a crab-walk) and run, pulling your body forward with your leading leg. That should give your groin area a workout.

ankle weights are a really bad idea..

actually a general workout program including running or any aerobic conditioning would work. consider cutting back on calories too if your overweight at all

if you want to tone, then workout 3 times a week and run. if you want to build muscle, then dont be a pussy and go lift weights.

Why is that? Bad on the joints?

I can't say I've ever heard of guys doing exercises exclusively for the inner thighs. It's really for women, especially for pregnant and postpartum women. You're asking for an extremely painful groin-pulling if you get on those machines where your legs start open and you close them.
If you look at most male bodybuilders the area is relatively weak-looking.

You don't hear about it because it's discouraged and looked down upon by other males.

I could see where having a strong groin would be useful in high activity sports like football and soccer - helpful with cuts and change of direction.

NO...squats, lunges and lots of varations of the two are what you need. I have a personal trainer and as a guy...I have NEVER worked my inner thy...the fat (which is why you work it) comes off when you eat right and excerise. Please...please..please don't get on that machine.

Oh don't forget to work out yoru hamstrings and calves...full effect....but god pls don't use that machine...many many guys will just laugh at you...the ladies will probably as well. I will say that when i use the elipitcal machine i can feel those muscles working if youw ant to try that but thats cardio. Just do free weight lunges and squats. When you do free weights and not machines you dont' just work the targeted muscles you work the little muscles as well.

On a side note i mean no disrespect here...i have seen guys do this and if thats what you want to do go for it....but really...you shouldn't.
