Best way to watch TV through a Geforce 4600?

I am going to be building my computer soon, and I was just curious as to what is the best way to watch TV through my MSI ti4600. Do I need to buy an external TV tuner? If so, what kind works best? I've also seen the Viewsonic TV tuner that plugs straight into your monitor. How do those work? Can you use your computer and watch TV at the same time? Would I be better off just getting a separate TV tuner card? If so, which one?

Sorry, for so many questions. I'm just going to college in the fall, and I'm trying to see if I can replace my TV with my computer. Thanks for any advice.

if you have video in, do what i did, hook a vcr up to it, use the composite out of the vcr to the composite in to the video card. cable is controlled through the vcr, but its tv 🙂

Hello.
I am not familiar with the Nvidia type of cards with TV ( I think they make them with tv turners). I know that different companies do make Nvidia products with video in and out. I have an ATI All In Wonder 7500 that has tv turner and video in and out. I have heard that ATI makes better cards with these features, but since I haven't used any of the Nvidia products I can not be certain.

I would suggest that you look at some of the cards at different manufacturers sites and see what they offer. On my ATI card it comes with a tv turner and is easy to use. It will display tv channels on my computer monitor (which is what I use quite often). It comes with a nice program called ATI Multimedia Center. With this group of programs I can watch tv, record tv and my card also provides for input output to external VCR ot tv. My card also comes with a program called Guide Plus. I can set it up to record shows using different codecs and video view size. Often the codecs (codec= coder, decoder) and view size determine the size of the file, file type, and the quality of the recording. Guide Plus will also give you a TV guide type of program according to the area you live in. This guide gives you the title of the show and a brief description. I can set it to record a show when I am not even at my computer, sort of like programming a VCR, except it is all done within the tvguide type program. Just a click of a mouse and you are set. You can also record without the use of the program.

TV turner cards will also work, though I had a bad experience with a cheaper model. That is why I went with the ATI all in wonder. I am sure that the more pricer models would give a better performance, though I have no experience of using them.

I would suggest you look at ATI's site and some of the Nvidia card makers and look at what they have to offer. Do some research and decide on what you would like.

I just reread your message. Does your card have the tv turner built in?

I don't know about the Viewsonic sorry.

I can't believe I didn't think about using the VCR. That should work fine, but it would be nice if there was a smaller, simpler solution.

My card had video in, but not a tv tuner.

Thanks a lot for the info.
