Best way to travel with PC?

I'm gonna be visiting some friends of mine for a week, and they demand that I bring my PC with me.

The problem is that I'll be flying there and I have no idea how to get my PC there. (I'm scared that it'll be mangled when I get there)

So, anyone have any ideas for traveling with a PC + Flat panel?

I was thinking of just putting it in my luggage, but carefully packaged, and I'm sure the PC could survive that, but then I don't know if the LCD would.

Am I just worrying too much? 😕

You may have problems taking it with you on the plane, IIRC the airlines will only allow ~50 pounds of luggage per passenger.

I wouldn't check the PC in whole. If you wanna, at least disassemble it, or your heatsink or some card inside might just come lose and wreak havok within the case.

For a week it's not worth it. If you just put it in the luggage and it's damaged they won't cover it. You have to declare it and box it right and then it will cost you a bunch extra to have it put on the plane.

My friend did that once. He got his computer back with a hole punched through it where a forklift made butter out of the case.

I would do it just find a better way ship it thru fed-ex or ups make sure the box and everything is good to go there shouldnt be a problem.

Just me being a conspiracy theorist, but I question your "friends" intentions.

Hook up your security cable and padlock between the system and your desk, get on the plane, and go drink beer. If your traveling computer isn't a traveling computer, it shouldn't be traveling. That's why we buy laptops. Your friends can either let you use their POS boxes, or you can take a self-imposed week's vacation from Anand's.

you can find cheap laptops at walmart,

otherwise..................

get security for your car if you wanna lug a desktop around,

I've seen some enthusiasts on CPUmag use carrying cases that strap around their tower with a hand carrying part at the top, you can then tuck LCD wires onto the side of the case with the straps (custom made one possibly),
then unmount the stand to and LCD monitor, and if you want, you can make brackets for sides of the LCD monitor in which they ends of it will have screw holes, so you can screw them into your MODed case, on the opposite end of the mobo, a side window on the tower may or may not be a good idea depending on how strong things get,
anyway, you want a wireless keyboard and mouse obviously, get a wireless MINI keyboard with extra long batter life, a laptop model perferably, and get one of those mice that don't require you to scroll with it even if it's an optical, there are mice out there that let you use it while in the air, I forgot what it's called, but you can find them at Officemax,
speaking of which, at Officemax you can find car plug ins that offer powerful AC plugins, you want the most expensive one, the logic behind that, you'll be able to suck out more electricity without any PSU disadvantages

a MicroATX tower would probably be the best option, where you can rip out, yes RIP OUT your glove compartment beneath your dashboard and carefully insert your PC there, that way the 'shotgun' person (or even the driver) can activate the onoff switch,

then if you want to get crazy, make a bracket for your CDrom/optical controller beneath your tape player, or CD player deck, you can get extended optical drive cables comin' out of your tower to your deck

alright now we're lookin' if you really want to do this, then you probably don't want to mount you LCD onto your desktop machine or even have the need for straps? so you can get a dual display adapter and put up 14" / 15" LCD displays behind the driver and shotgun seats if you want to get crazy or you can rip out your viewrear mirror and have a DVD screen as your monitor, but the text and graphics will be very sloppy, at like less than 800x600, but you can rewire this to receive visual from even your LPT port

you want a printer, just snap out your top part of the dashboard and install a printer above the glove compartment?

somebody please add to this.............. I'm running out of ideas

edit: hahahaa this is probably the stupid stuff I've ever written. you can get a wireless network and just play outside their house in your damn car! hahahaa holy SH!T

get a VGA lock so no one steals your graphics card

huh? edit: I just got what you meant. I'm not taking the pc to post on AT, I'm not that addicted, really. Really.

It's just so we can play WoW together when we're not out partying.. lol

And I was thinking of getting a laptop or building a SFF pc, but I can't justify spending the money on it. (This computer is... 15 months old, no sense to build another PC so soon)

Yeah, I was planning on removing the videocard atleast (6800GT, just got it a few months back), cause it's huge.. and I still have the box for it, so I can always drop it in there.

Maybe I'll just get a laptop, use it for that time and then give it to my dad as a xmas/birthday present. His laptop sucks and he could really use a new one.

There is way too much room for error here. There are so many things that could go wrong with this, its really not worth it to take yourcomputer with you. They demand that you bring your computer? You demand that they stop being stupid.
