The only way I know how to do it, is with tape player and a Mic in on the sound card. Naturally, it sounds horrible...whats the best way to do this?

omfg. You mean that you've used the mic to record the speakers from your stereo? LOL! I've never heard of anyone doing that before. Anyway, your soundcard will have a line in jack. You can use a 1/8" to rca or just 1/8" to 1/8" and go from the output on the tapedeck or even the headphone jack on the stereo right into the line in.

Try connecting the tape deck's headphone out to your sound card's line in. If you use the RCA audio outs (which I presume is what you are doing), you might be overdriving the sound card's input.

This is easy to do. Just follow mithrandir2001's advice. I've done the same thing before and it's a very easy process.

Going from RCA to the sound card is probably best. You can get the cable from Radio Shack.

I've used this setup to record several tapes and haven't had any overload problems, but if your tape deck has variable output you can adjust from that (also your recording software should have an adjustment for the line in level)

You can also digitize one side of the tape as one big file, then cut it into individual tracks later with Sound Recorder.
