Best way to transfer all PS3 data to new PS3?

bought a PS3 slim and plan to sell the 40gb fat.
i want this to be as painless as possible, meaning i want to copy EVERYTHING (saved games, DLC, settings, etc.).

is it just backup and then restore?
is there a way to do it over the network?
if not, will an external USB HD work?

USB hard drive is the easiest.

I recently upgraded to a slim from a 20GB fat (selling the fat if anyone is interested in PS2 compatibility 😛)

I followed the instructions here and it worked great.

Some game saves won't transfer to USB devices (Demon's Souls come to mind) for some strange reason. Be careful with that if you really don't want to lose your game saves.
