I've got a WD MyBook Live Duo 6tb that is almost filled up now with only music/videos for itunes. I just got a Drobo 5N as a replacement.

1. I am planning on getting 3tb WD red drives for it. Good choice?

2. What's the most efficient way to transfer over all that data? I would prefer not spending several days doing it if possible.

TIA

You don't really have a choice, you are limited by the speed of your 6TB device. Sure, you can open that up, and plug it into your machine, and transfer it that way, but it still is going to take quite some time. 6TB is lots of data.

Open up your WD MyBook Live Duo 6tb, rip out the pair of 3TB drives, plug the drives into the Drobo 5N

Transfer done in seconds and now you only need to buy 3 more drives instead of 5.

No, horrible idea. He's running them in RAID 0 on a proprietary device and controller inside the WD MyBook. OP, your only option is to transfer the files over GbE to the new drives. I would move the data to the Drobo and use a syncronization software to keep the WD MyBook updated on a daily basis, following the original migration, if it was my data. Microsoft SyncToy works well for this and it's free.

You might be right. Still, RAID0 on a NAS? That just strikes me as a bad idea if you care about your data.

For the Drobo get at least 4 2+TB drive and it will run raid 5, It will take the data as fast as your Mac can dish it out.
