best way to test LAN performance?

I have a WIndows 7 PC hooked up to my home LAN (GigE) and attached to that are 2 Linux servers and a few laptops.

What's the best, easy way to test network bandwidth? I would like to tweak the perfomance a bit, as I think I'm getting less than optimal throughput for internal LAN transfers and backups.
