i was just wondering what programs you guys recommend that tax your components enough to test the stability of an oc'd system. thanks

There's the Passmark BurnInTest, or you can also run burn-in cycles using SiSoft Sandra.

run 3dmark2000 and 2001 in loop a few times, yes i know some people say its gay and doesnt test game performance very well, but it does test stability well, then i would also get a program called proccermark and u leave that on for like 12 hours, you get them all here http://www.tweakfiles.com/benchmark/

One proven recipie of finding some stability issues is running
multipile copies of XCOPY for a very long file(s).

Used to stress I/O quite well :)

Gregory A. Pribush Jr., iMPG.
Not speaking for Intel :)

What you do is is run Quake2 or Unreal for a 24 hour period and if they don't crash then your overclocked CPU is stable.

I always use Prime 95 in the torture test. I've noticed some instability at speeds I though were stable before. Now I use it all the time to verify overclocks. While running this program the CPU load is 100%.
Hot CPU Tester is a really good program too, but unstability is shown faster in Prime95. 3D Mark 2000 also stresses the CPU, but the 2001 version causes crashes to some folks (like me). So I would recommend it as a system stability tester program. The best approach is to use 2 or more programs to test for stability, never relly on only one. :D

I've run Quake 3 on an o/c'ed system before for literally about 20 hours and it ran fine. I then downloaded Prime95 and it gave errors within the first minute or two. I didn't even pay attention to Prime95 since my Q3 was so stable and proceeded to compress a movie to mpeg4. The computer crashed out overnight and I could never run compression utility again. Prime95 is a killer and I highly recomend it.

prime95 is good for testing the processor..

another good one is called cpuburn or something like that..

when you unzip there is a few executables.. one called burnbx.exe which is good for any cpu/chipset despite it's name. I really taxes the memory/cpu and this program has heated up my cpu more than any other I've tried. The maker says if you can run this for more than 10 minutes without it crashing then your system is stable :) I ran it for a few hours easily 600@900 celeron default voltage. Survived prime95 no sweat also.

don't have a link handy.. try doing a search for burnbx or cpuburn

You should use at least the following.

Prime95 (tests mostly the integer unit)
StabilityTest (this tests both integer and fpu I think)
3dMark2000/20001 (you need this to test video card stability and SSE/SSE2 units)

Run these alone and together for several days. If you have a game like Q3A or UT, you can also run loops of these.

Sandra loops can also test instability.

I do not test my comp but I run SETI@home.
Right now I have PIII 1000@1088 ( + memory at 145 and video card o/c:ed).
That is with standard CPU cooler and one side of the case taken off.
SETI has been running for almost two weeks now - non-stop. No problemo.
