Best way to take a DVD and convert to digital file

also, what setting would be the best? this is for playback on a tv.

1. Quality is number one (must use AAC audio)
2. File size is important, but not at the expense of quality.

it doesn't have aac audio yet, but Fairuse Wizard can use ogg (sounds great at 36 kbps) and let you use divx, xvid, or x264 (said to be the best codec though more cpu intensive, it's what i use). the free version of fairuse is limited to 700MB per video. I use it often

Perhaps I'm not understanding your request. DVD's are already digital files.
If you are putting these on a media PC, I would just use DVD Decryptor to rip the files to the hard drive, then use something like Power DVD to play the files from the hard drive. There will be ZERO loss of quality, although each movie will eat up a nice chunk of hard drive space.

if you can't find it then just pm me and i will upload to my FTP server.

I can convert 30min video raw video in less than 5min to XVID , DVIX ect : )

You can see if its Video Quality your looking for.

its just best to leave it on dvd😛 recompression is recompression.

Leave the video and one audio track untouched, strip out everything else.
DVDFabDecrypter or AnyDVD and DVD Shrink is all you need.

Two things. One, can DVD video be streamed over a wireless G network? Two, if DVDs are like four gigs, I won't be able to hold many movies. Even a 500 giga-byte HD will only hold 100.

Thats why I would be willing to lose a little video quality (not audio) in order to save space.

can I check this out? I rip my DVDs so I have the digital file. if this works, it would be great.

Keep in mind the difference in size between a typical divx converted movie (700mb - 1.4gig) to a straight ripped DVD left in its original format (>= 8.5gig), to formatted/shrunken DVD (>= 4.7gig)...

I personally prefer to do my own reauthoring of original DVD's in order to rid them of all of the extra crap I'll never watch, and putting them on DVDr's... I'm then able to archive the original pressed DVD's being comfortable they will last as long as I need them.

I typically convert to Divx only if Im planning on storing the movie/show on my harddrive.. Harddrives are reasonably priced these days, so it would be realistic to just archive the originally ripped version on your Harddrive. I personally need all the space I have for multiple reencoding instances and other storage, so I prefer the prior...

As far as I'm concerned, there's only ONE right answer to the question of DVD -> AVI file.

It by far provides the best quality while still being very easy to use. It basically takes the best tools for this process, and automates it completely.

Why AAC? If you want high quality audio, just preserve the original AC3 stream.
