Best way to sync/deal with a crapload of bookmarks

Ok so i probably bookmark wayy more than i should, and over time, my bookmark library has grown to be in the thousands. (maybe more, not sure, is there a way to check?)

I was previously using xmarks, but it was very slow, and everytime i closed out the program, it would take a while to sync since the bookmarks collection was so huge.

This was about a year ago. Has bookmark sync been improved over this time? I also am oncerened with it not syncing right away. For example, if im reading something at home, add to bookmarks, and then go on my laptop, sometimes it wont be there, and i have to go and find it somewhere else.

I need sync again, because im using my laptop more than my desktop, but i would like access to all my bookmarks, and have it work right!

I really doubt there's any good solution to deal with that many bookmarks. I use xmarks but I only have maybe a few hundred bookmarks if that.

You'd probably be best served by trying to control your bookmarkohlism. 😉

haha well in the process of weeding out, and then just saving ones i need.

I save a lot of things for reference, for example: I have a folder with all tips on building a website, projects that i want to do-but dont have time now, career tips, hackintosh links, windows tips, mac tips, etc.

So when i decide to finally get around to it, i just search my bookmarks, and there it is.

I read lifehacker and gizmodo a lot, so many projects and tips i want to save so i remember them.

Thinking of just exporting all of them, and then just searching that html when i need something, but then it gets messy when i go to add new ones to that category.

To Merad: How quickly does xmarks sync now? Im concerned with turning my laptop on a school, and not having a link there because it didnt sync fast enough.

Im starting to use chrome more than firefox, and last time i used xmarks, it worked substantially better in firefox for some reason.

how does it compare to chromes built in sync if im only using chrome?

I just tried adding a new folder with about a dozen bookmarks and doing a manual sync. Took maybe 3 seconds.

I'm sure your time will be higher with so many more bookmarks, but it's probably worth trying it again.

Edit: When you used xmarks before, were you syncing bookmarks only or also tabs & history? Definitely turn off everything but bookmarks to get the fastest possible sync.

Edit2: I don't actually use Chrome's built in sync, so I can't answer that. Primarily use FF and and then use xmarks to keep FF & Chrome in sync.

Yea just tried using chrome sync, it was terrible.

First off thank god i backed up my bookmarks, because once i signed in to chrome sync it automatically replaced all my bookmarks with the ones on the server from a year or so ago, without even asking me. (either that or merged them, but either way, i could have been screwed.

Going to try out xmarks again. According to chrome, i have about 450 bookmarks, which is less than i thought.

Does it sync in the background? or upon close? and are theyre any compatibility issues with ff and chrome. Particulalry with the bookmarks toolbar?

will report back with my results.

getting frustrated.

Decided what i would do was leave firefox with all the bookmarks and just use that on my main pc.

Im already using chrome on my laptop, so i decided to try chrome sync. Then i could see my laptops bookmarks from my computer with chrome, and not have to sync my whole collection everytime.

Chrome sync is god awful. Tried it multiple times, and it never worked right. It has real time syncing at first (i would bookmark a link, and watch it appear on the other screen) but it only synced half of my small library of about 30 bookmarks for some reason.

Decided to just go with xmarks for chrome, because it seemed like it would be more reliable. Installed, synced, and then i wanted to see how quickly it worked.

Heres the problem..... It never syncs!!!!!!!!! Ill bookmark something, and then it will just sit there with that fucking exclamation mark. Yes i can manually sync it everytime, but what the hell good is it then?

I often finish my browsing session and then quit out of chrome. So any changes i made dont go on the server. at least in FF it would prompt me if i wanted to sync before closing.

No idea what xmarks means when it says auto sync. Ive been sitting here for about 10 mins and nothing has been synced. So anytime before i close out chrome (#W or #Q in mac) i have to check it first.

about to just give up.

From a google search it looks like xmarks auto syncs every hr or so. In chrome is there not an option to sync on startup or shutdown?

I use google chrome + google account. maybe if you export them to firefox then import them into chrome when signed in it will work?

well for chrome i just made a small set of bookmarks to see if it would work. I was using the same setup

No option, and that is embarrassingly terrible. I hardly ever leave my browser open for for than 20 mins or so at a time. Not to mention i completely close out chrome when im not using it, and once you open up again it doesnt know that it didnt sync last time.

I give up lol
