Best way to swap dying hd with new one

old hd is about too kick it ( whying a LOT). Want to put in new hd with out lossing all info eg.updates ,programs etc. HAve win xp pro sp2
 
SO i can just dump anouther sata drive in there, and the program will transfer every thing to new one ?? Have to put os in first??
