Best Way to Stream Movies over Network

I eventually want to rip all of my DVDs onto a HDD and connect the HDD to my network. I currently have a Time Capsule as my wireless router.

Would it be easier to just get an Apple TV and just connect it to my main TV and stream it that way or should I get a TV that is internet ready and just go that route.

Can that external HDD be connected directly to the capsule via USB and used as a NAS?

I believe so. I have the last gen Airport Extreme, and use the USB to have an external 1 TB drive on my network. I don't know about the aTV seeing it, but all my computers on the network can, and have indeed used it to stream media to the computers on my network. If you have an Xbox, or PS3.. it's super easy to stream via your Airport Disk with a program like MediaLink, or Connect360/Rivet.
