Best way to ship a computer?

Gotta ship a computer tomorrow and wondering if any of you have any general tips in shipping the package. Should I go with UPS or FedEx? I was thinking that I might use Mail Boxes etc. to help me correctly package and ship the computer.

BIG box and lot's of peanuts. Put comp in a bag first too..
Fedex groundsaver is pretty cheap, and they usually won't leave stuff on your doorstep either.

ship it ground its way cheaper, if you have the original box for the case use that, if not just stuff a box full of peanuts, thats how i got a computer i bought once. It wasnt damaged at all and it was even UPS (worst shipping company on earth)

Once your package gets large USPS gets really expensive. I would go FedEX Ground since they do the best and delivering packages intact. Still use lots of bubble wrap.

Officeboy - I worked for UPS (put packages into trailers to ship across the US) and trust me, no one treats your packages worse than UPS. If you saw how they were treated you would never send a package w/ UPS again. My aunt works for FedEx and I've visited their shipping areas before, nothing like UPS at all. FedEx is top notch.

I have a few friends that work for UPS too, so I know just how bad it can be... Stories of the pallet truck being 2-3 inches to high picking up a pallet of monitors, and sticking the blades though the whole bottom row.... OUCH.
Why do you think I recommended FedEx? 🙂

oops. Well I've ship via USPS all the time, never had anything lost or damaged *yet* 😉

And for the pallet story, either: A) the forklift isn't being operated correctly (I've stuck holes through walls at my current job w/ a forklift, but that was in my newbie days ;D) or the pallet broke. That's operator error as opposed to company error. Still bad though.

It was operator error, My bro was standing right there, and the guy forked those moniters said sh1t, pulled out, and got under the pallet. Then stuckem on the truck. My brother said they were 21" dell trinitrons too. 🙁

Well, I got a computer case box which I'll put the computer in. It doesn't fit quite right, but I'll try to pack it in as best as I can with bubble wrap. Then I think I'll take it over to Mail Boxes Etc to double box it with foam peanuts. They charge a bit more, but better safe than sorry I guess. And I'll go with FedEx Ground Saver if possible.

ive seen ups drop a stack of monitors too high and causally pick them up and act as if nothing happened. bwahahahahahaha so sad.

ship it insured ups. if they break it, they pay for it. they paid me $3000 for a crack in a monitor and some other crap in the comp that was worth about $1000 in damages. i got dell to replace the monitor plus the $3000 from ups 🙂

I saw a UPS driver pick up a $25,000 Nortel OC-12 fiber optic transmitter card and throw it across floor of the truck like it was a bag of flour! I reminded him about that "Fragile" on the box and he asked how much the contents was. 🙂

I hope my company switches to Fedex because then maybe I won't be replacing so many of those Nortel OC-192 cards that cost $50,000 and up.

Stuff newspaper inside the case to avoid stuff falling off.
USPS gets expensive for large packages because they are automatically upgraded to priority mail which is usually 3 day but no guarantee. For coast to coast I'd rather go with priority mail. FedEx express saver is good option also.

don't ship in just the case box! my sis did that and somwhere along the line something got popped off. The sloket, heatsink and fan and a few other parts were bouncing around in the case when i got it. Luckily only had to replace the slcoket. If you can, remove the heatsink, and any other parts that could pop loose. Heatsinks are nasty cause they are a heavy hunk of metal with sharp edges bouncing in the case.

UPS has lost 2 packages, delayed 4, and delivered 1 package to someone else, all in a 6 month time frame. Actually, in the last 6 months they have only delivered 2 out of 9 correctly. Most of the time I receive a package from UPS the box looks like it has been shredded, one day the driver dropped off a monitor and dropped it from about 3 feet off the ground, and he did it with the box upside down. They never ask for my signature even though almost all packages I have delivered via them require one. The package that was misdelivered arrived to some business about 30 miles from my house. That package that was misdelivered was extremely urgent, I had paid quite a bit extra to have it shipped overnight, and it took me two weeks before I finally received it. Whoop de doo, after 2 months I finally received my $40 refund from them.

I will never use UPS again.

One word: FedEx.

Actuall, lots of peanuts might not do it since there are a lot of hollow space in the case.

What I suggest doing is disassemble, and bubble wrap each individual cards, drives, and motherboard. Send them that way. As for the case, you can ship it, or screw it and get a new one when you get there. They're not that expensive anyway.
