Best way to ship a bike?

I'm at university in TX, and the bike that I was borrowing from my roommate got stolen. Rather than a crappy bike again(it really sucked) I'd like to get my nice(r) Trek from back home. The only issue is that it's in MA. I have purchased plane tickets already for the trip to and from for Christmas break. I know that some airlines have bike boxes, but I couldn't get a good straight answer from the lady at American Airlines, she only gave me the info for extra-large packages. I'm pretty sure there's a special rate for it. Fausto?

Break it down, box it, buy it a ticket, talk to it loudly and frequently during the plane ride. The best part? Extra airplane meal FTW!

Have somebody take the bike to a bike store. They have the boxes, they know how to dissasemble it, they know how to make it fit in the box.

It might cost $50, but it would be worth it.

This is what I've always done.

i paid $50 special cargo fee in the late 1990's when I flew my bike and myself out to San Diego for the summer. Got the box from the airline in advance, dismanteled it (wheels, seat, bar ends), packed it (with my tools), and reassembled it no problem.

Same...

but if you have a tool kit. It is a little cheaper to ship it yourself. Depending on frame size, if you break it down enough (or buy a bike carriage), you could just ship it on your plane ticket.

I'd just snag a bike box from a LBS, break her down yourself, and call the airline before your flight to inform them. Shouldn't be more than $20 more in cargo bay.

Option 1: Ship it FedEx or UPS in a box from a bike shop.
Option 2: Get a bike box from shop and check in the bike with your flight. I think it's $80 or so. That's what I did when moving from Europe to the US.

LBS = Local Bike Shop?

I found a page on breaking down a bike the right way: http://www.rideyourbike.com/boxbike.html

So if it turns out to be cheaper via UPS/FedEX/DHL/OMG, I'll do that.

Depends on where you ship it but from VA to AZ it costs around $130.

What carrier, and how much did it weigh?

i found the best method to be, melt the bike into bricks and put it in ur suitcase. once at your destination, wave your wand and turn it back into you bike 😛

UPS or FedEx I don't remember. I just entered the size of the box and 40lbs for weight and the site spit out the number.
