Say I am surfing the net on my desktop, and want to text a URL to someone. What is the best way? I email the URL to myself, and then open the phone, open my email, copy URL, and paste it into SMS app. Is there a better way?

Download MightyText and send the text directly from your desktop

I prefer mySMS over MightyText (as it has a limit), but yeah, I use a desktop texting app all day long at work. WAY better than typing on a phone.

Could not get MightyText to work.
Kept saying Chrome ain't allowing cookies, yet that's not true.
I also turned off AdBlock for that domain.

What a piece of crap.
Don't people beta test their garbage before releasing it?

Using MT in Chrome as we speak. Works fine. As Homer said, there's a limit, but haven't had any issues you're describing.

What exactly is the use case for Mighty Text (besides wanting to paste URLs into a text)

You can sync your clipboard between your phone and desktop with an app then just copy the URL on your desktop and paste it to a text on your phone.

Just text this person using some form of IM that works for both devices or something like on facebook.

Typing on a real keyboard >>>> typing on a tiny smartphone virtual keyboard

I've never heard of Mighty Text but Mac's Messages program integrates with your iPhone so when you get an iMessage it comes through on the phone and the Mac. It's so much more convenient to have a text conversation on a real keyboard.

Correct. I sit at my desk all day at work. Rather than have to take out my phone I can just leave Chrome open (or not, it can just pop up a message in the systray) and I can read/respond right in Chrome. Phone stays in pocket and I can type full/coherent/proper sentences much more easily.

+1 MightyText

I sit at an office desk all day so it makes messaging easy. Rarely have my phone out. Plus sometimes I can't hear my phone but see the "Incoming Call" pop-up message. Very handy.

I use shrib.com/yourfilenamehere (e.g. shrib.com/crono). If you just go to shrib.com you get a random filename.

It's a shareable notepad. Very handy.

I always opt for hangouts or messenger for the same reason, it's nice to be able to maintain a conversation seemlessly across devices/platforms and be able to IM to people from a desktop PC. Thankfully pretty much nobody i message on any kind of regular basis uses SMS as the main way to communicate anymore.

So I use hangout now with my Android phone for SMS with my main phone number. The SMS don't show up in hangouts on my web page. Is it possible with my cell number or do I need to use a google voice number? Thought it would work this way..

It's possible to integrate with your mobile number if you have an Android phone. I think you need to enable/authorize it in the app.

Can someone explain what Google Voice and Hangouts are, and how they allow you to text from your browser?

Looked in the settings and didn't see anything that resembles that.

Setting I seen.
- Enable merged conversations ( looks to focus on merging conversations based on the same contact)

Under SMS you get options to pick default SMS account which basically let's you pick carrier or goggle voice number.
