Best way to share files with friends?

I have a few files around 30-40mb in size that I want to share with some friends and I was wondering what is the best way to do this.

As of right now I just use the send a file option with AIM, the rate is 20kbs, which is ok, but I need to be on for this to work.

I have read a little about setting up a fileserver, I do have an extra computer which would work for this and which I could leave on, but my ISP supposedly doesn't allow web servers and the like. I think its mostly because they don't want their bandwidth getting hogged? Since this is with a small group of people, would it feasible to set up or would it be a noticible problem?

Are there any other free services that will host large files for you, or inexpensive pay sites?

Thanks

in competing with google mail, a lot of free e-mail hosts (like yahoo and hotmail) are increasing the attachment file size.

Your ISP may be giving you some free webspace as well that you could post the files on.

Just run a FTP server n00b, I used too and my isp never allowed them either. I used a great program called Serv-U it allowed for many options.

be careful because they have "g word" limit or something. Its a nice service reguardless.

Heres what it says... check the policy for the allotted bandwidth and time needed.

Your transfer cannot be completed. Most likely the file has exceeded its allotted bandwidth or has been removed by the original sender or a recipient.
Due to overwhelming load, YouSendIt has disabled unlimited sharing of all files regardless of file size. YouSendIt may alter this policy in the future.

I just buy a domain for $8 a year and then set up a webhost for $15 a year. It's under $2 a month and a lot easier than all the file sharing stuff IMHO. FTP it up, email the link and you're done. Let your buddies go out and grab it at their leisure.

this is a very good idea because YOU only have to upload it once. then your friends can get it at a faster speed and you dont have to worry about tying up your connection or being available to send it.

this is what i would do.

if i just wanted to share all my stuff with multiple friends, i would set up an ftp server on my comp (serv-u prolly) and give them all accounts. that doesnt really fit with what you are trying to do tho.

if you are at a university do you have any webspace with the school?

I went ahead and set up Serv-U and its working great, thanks for the advice.

For security, I opened up port 21, since the ftp requires a login name and password, is that still reasonable secure?

for 50MB, i can host you for free, 😉 PM me

if you ever want to up it, i'll do it low cost....at least until i pay off my server, 😉 then probably free
