Best way to set up home network with server 2003

buck

Lifer
I am putting together a file server with server 2003 rc2. My needs/wants are as follows:
  • Ability to remote to server from work/home machine
  • Be able to access files from the server from 2-3 home machines
  • Be able to play games, download torrents, etc from gaming machine

I was just going to go from my comcast modem to the server, but my server machine only has one NIC. Then I thought if I have my server and other machines plugged into a router then I couldn't access it from work. I have a router and a hub that I can use to get the best setup. I am still a bit of a newb, so I am asking for your opinions on the best setup for me. Thanks for your time and any thoughts.

Any router worth money will let you forward ports to a specific internal IP so forward 3389 and RDP will work from the outside.

From he content of your post it is not clear why you are using Windows2003?

Learning, I just ordered a book on it and work let me use *one of" their keys as long as it was for learning purposes. I don't have extra keys for any other OS except for 98se either.

So If I had all 3-4 computers on my router and just had the 3389 port forwarded, I would be able to RDP into the box? Sounds like the best solution.

I guess I should save further question until I read up a little bit more and don't fumble my words.

Well you can only forward a port to one IP at a time, but yea.

Less red tape for you if you're not on an enterprise WAN with an enterprise router between home and work being managed by some other than your local IT team. If so they may be blocking certain ports.

In case of RDP you change the Listening port of each computer and forward it to its IP.

I checked before starting this little project. Thanks for the heads up though, could have been something easy to overlook.
