best way to rip a dvd to mpg?

i am currently using smart ripper to rip the dvd, then use dvd2avi and then tmpgenc to create the mpg, but the mpg is rather big and there's got to be an easier way. thx

Seems like a good way. Try lowering the bit rate for the mpg, that should make it smaller.

MPG is gonna be the largest format. Try DIVX/XVID - but it depends if you want it to play in a standalone player (which leads to the question why are you converting it to another format).

I have had good luck with Gordian Knot when making DiVX files. I would give that a try and you can find a good tutorial on www.doom9.org
