Just wondering, my friend just gave me his Voodoo3 for my test rig and I'm gonna do a cooling mod on it, but I need to remove the glued on heatsink. What's the best way? I heard you can freeze it or toast it, is there anything else? And which of those is less dangerous? Thanks!

install it as your primary video card, then run Quake3 for 2 hours @ 1600x1200 with all details set to Max. The the glue will be so hot you can literally just twist the heatsink off. Or, alternately, stick it in the freezer, then twist it off. DO NOT pry upwards on it, as you are liable to remove the chip from the board. (I know from experience)

V3 2000, 3000, or 3500? The 2000 has an epoxied black anodized heatsink. The 3000 has a plain aluminum heatsink held on with brass mounting pins. The 3500 has... umm... I dont know :) For the epoxied heatsink:

For the pin-mounted heatsink, just remove the pins and pull the heatsink off. There is a thermal-compoun-fabric-mesh TIM on the V3 3000s, which may be difficult to remove.

For the crap glue that 3dfx (STB manufactured) uses, the freezing method is quick and easy. Works everytime. I've modded 5 V3 GPUs without a problem.

Heck, my method even works for ASTE, assuming you have enough room and space for leverage ;)
