Best way to remove sticker residue?

I got a new rear-view mirror for my car. The mirror had a sticker on it and when I removed the sticker it left behind some residue. What's the best way to remove sticker residue from mirrors?

I know some people recommend goo-gone, but I'd rather not have to go out and buy that. I've seen people recommend hairspray, mayonnaise, cooking oil, rubbing alcohol and lots of other crazy things.

What have you used and how did it turn out?

You can often get the residue off by using the sticker that you just peeled off...just put the sticky part back on the leftover glue and peel it back off repeatedly.

baby oil/mineral oil leave it on for a couple minutes and it comes right off. you can use it on plastic to get the goo off without damaging it.

Of all things that I've tried, razor blades are by far the easiest and best. Don't stick the sharp end right onto the mirror and scratch at the goo with the blade tip (probably no harm, but you don't want to potentially scratch the glass). Instead, take the blade at an angle almost parallel with the glass, and use the whole blade surface. There are even $3 tools designed to help you with this task.

If you really don't want that option, use the sticker itself and dab at the goo.

If that fails, then try goo gone or a solvent.

But really, the razor blade is the proper tool for removing things from glass or mirrors. It is faster, easier, and far more effective than anything else.

Denatured alcohol or if you don't have any on hand Rubbing alcohol but it will take more work as it is ~30% water

Don't want to buy goo gone as stated in the OP and not sure I want to take a blade to the mirror. I've scratched glass before when trying that. I tried using the sticker to remove the residue, but it didn't work.

Sounds like lighter fluid, 100% rubbing alcohol and acetone are what I should try.

You use tape to get rid of sticker residue. Take tape, put it down over residue, rub it a little, then peel it out real quick. Residue will stick to tape. That's how I get rid of all the sticker residue on CDs and DVDs.

Warm Isopropyl alcohol should do the trick without the potential of discoloring any plastics that it contacts.
