Best way to remove Arctic Silver from a P4?

Hi,

Wondering what the best way to remove Arctic Silver from a P4? Will it just wipe off the top plate or should I use some sort of cleaner to get it off? AS's website suggests a way to remove it from 'CPU Ceramic' but I'm not sure a P4 qualifies in that category.

(Yes, I'm second-guessing my thermal paste installation)

😕

Wipe off the excess with a paper towel. Clean off the rest with some Carb and Choke cleaner from your local auto parts store or Wal-Mart, then finish it off with some alcohol. 🙂

Why are you removing it? If you are going to reapply, you're better off "rubbing it in", and reapplying. That way you are at least filling in the gaps. If you try to clean it out, you might be making it worse...

also, why are you second-guessing? Did you leave it on for the "burn-in" period?

Just trying to help 🙂

Well, I read the instructions, took my PC apart and then realized I hadn't printed the instructions out... and missed the step about rubbing it into the heatsink, then wiping it off and then putting it on the CPU. Not sure what kind of bearing that has on things. It's not through the burn-in period yet, only did it on Saturday and they suggest up to 200 hours right?

I've still had my CPU up to 52c after installing the new heatsink, and hoped for a little more. After some testing today it turns out my case temp is what's killing me. I have a Lian-Li 6070 that has two front intakes sucking through the bottom through a filter (because the case has a front door). With the case front off and the fans sucking laterally instead of vertically my case and CPU are about 31c. With the front on I'm up to 36-37. At load the CPU temp hits 53 with the front on, and 42 with the front off. I think I'm going to have to cut an intake through the bottom (scary).

take one of the fron fans, and move it to the rear of the case, and have it exhausting the air. w/ neutral pressure, your case temps, and cpu temps should drop.
