Best way to remotely administer a server/HTPC combo?

To control my server/HTPC box (its one computer, double duty) I used to use some overly complex way of doing things involving windows remote desktop and two user accounts on the server. Long story short to hell with setting up all that balls again.

Ive just tried teamviewer and it seems pretty good so far. I just want to administer/control the server from my main computer upstairs, that's all. Is teamviewer the best solution for this? How does it work anyway? I dont really want it to stop working if the teamviewer server dies or anything, i gather it uses an external server?

Install teamviewer as a service on the htpc. you can set a static password, and also set it to allow local IP connections. then inputting the local IP on the htpc will get you to it also.

Use RDP as a backup.

What was so complicated about remote desktop exactly? I use it to remote admin all my windows PCs at home and it works like a charm

I've got to ask the same question. It's as simple as opening RDP and typing in the hostname or IP address and you're staring at the login screen as if you were sitting right at that PC. Anything you're doing with multiple user accounts and security settings is going to be precisely the same issue with teamviewer, logmein, vnc, etc as that's all settings on the server itself totally agnostic of the remote connection protocol.

RDP wasent playing nice with XBMC when I directly logged into the HTPC account where XBMC constantly runs. I cant remember the issue but I think the HTPC account would need to be logged back in again with a mouse click, defeated the point of remote admin.

Im fed up with windows and its weird ways. I just spent an hour trying to get homegroup to work. Turns out you cant share the root of a drive through it, fair enough but nowhere does it say that!! I love this teamviewer thing, just seizes control of the computer and releases it on disconnection, no weird restrictions, no logging out of the account no unnecessary dicking about. Dont get me wrong I was pretty amazed by RDP when I first tried it but other stuff seems to work better now :)

Sounds like something an XBMC software update would probably address, but hey, if you've got it working and you like it by all means :)
