best way to read cpu temp without mobo support

What's the best alternative to read the temp when your cheapass mobo doesn't have the lm78 and gl5187sm chips? Is there anything I can use to read the temp from the c2 thermal diode? How about an outdoor thermometer temperature probe stuck to the heatsink? Thanks...

P.S. Any ideas on where to FIND a LM78 and gl5187sm and solder it to my board?
