Best way to password protect folders?

I recently got couple external hard rives to backup my personal data. I don't want someone to just be able to plug it in and access all my information. I was wondering if there was an effective convenient way to password protect a folder. I know I could zip and apply a password to it but this would be too time consuming since I would have to zip and unzip every time.
 
Try TrueCrypt. They have full disk encryption as an option too. Most friendly and promising encryption mechanism I have ever seen.
