Has anyone found a good way to partition a 80 gig HD to help reduce the waste.
At the moment I kept on NTFS partition under Win 2k. I think i am wasting alot of space by not reducing the partition but not sure yet. Any ideas to try?

You don't waste any space by not partitioning the HD; you just have ALL the space in one partition as opposed to breaking it up.

What exactly are you trying to do? Create another partition w/o destroying the data you have on there now? You'll need a program like Partition Magic to do that.

Partitioning does not waste any space, except when oversized clusters are used. The larger the clusters, the more space is wasted with each file. Your see, if you have a 64K cluster size, then no piece of data can take up less than 64K. So, a 100K file will take up two whole 64K clusters instead of 100K. NTFS is better about this with larger partitions that FAT32. Splitting up your harddisk into smaller partitions will increase the efficiency, but you probably won't notice it too much.

Partitioning a large drive does increase maintenance efficiency and reduces fragmentation in many respects. With NTFS you don't waste space to speak of. Defragging and optimization are much more efficient on smaller partitions. A lot depends on how you work and what you do. I have 80 GB drives and use 5 partitions - the last one being solely for the PageFile and a 1 GB cache for CD burning. I try to keep the C:\ partition reserved for the operating system and essentials to it.
Anyway, it is a very flexible system, and PartitionMagic 8 is a slick improvement that allows easy adjustments.

Hey if u have to partition the drive i recommend like 10GB for C the rest split in either 2 or 3 drives of ur choosing..

beside i have a 120gb and have like 5 partition..and i have no problems..
