Well right now I have them ordered by Rap, Hip-Hop, etc... but sometimes I have trouble distinguishing between music like Alternative and Rock.. you know? I'm thinking of organizing them by artist now. How do all of you have yours organized?

I have a folder for each letter of the alphabet and within each folder I have a folder for each artist. I used to just have one huge folder, but that got way too big to manage.

I organize mine like this:

Full Albums
Techno
Comedy
Classical
Other MP3s

I lump rap, hip-hop, metal, etc. together to avoid any confusion. I also use " [ ] " for the name of the singer/band to keep some order in the folders...

I only listen to "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion so I don't have to organize my mp3.

It's always playing in WinAmp.

Ditto. Each song is labelled Artist>Album Title>Track #>Song Title so you just click "sort by name" to find what you're after.

Is this some kind of new-age death penalty that I'm not aware of or something?

I only have a few, but as far as organizing I would go with something like this:

rock_title_artist
rock_alternative_title_artist
rock_acid_title_artist

Put the catagory, followed by a sub-catagory, then the details. Rap will never get mixed up with rock, or trance, etc. You can view them quickly that way and it should work well.

Funny that you say that. I used to have the Celine Dion Greatest Hits cd... I bought it from a used cd store for like $5 in 1998... I started dating this girl and she grabbed it from my cd case and threw it out the window of my car in Pennsylvania (we're from TN). I asked her what was up with that because I hadn't played it or anything... She just threw my cd away. I guess she didn't like Celine much. :p

Yes, but did she pee on it first? Pics? :Q :p

Celine has an amazing voice, but I just can't get around the fact that she's a complete freak with zero grasp on reality.

OMG I was just about to post on this! Last night I discovered that if I organized all my albums into their own folders with Windows XP, and then I set each folder's content settings to 'Music Albums', Windows XP will automatically find the cover art for the album and set that as the folder image!!!!!!! Go try it!!!!!!

I have one folder for each artist... I think I should reorganize it, though (alphabetical by first letter).

I organize based on categories and subcategories. It's the easiest way to get to the file you want.

Classical
----Instrumental
--------Mahler
----Opera & Choral
--------Handel

etc...

ive only got about 700 or so
3 folders
music/songs
comedy
classical music

artist name - track name

dont care about the album name or anything else, and with only 700 its pretty easy to keep up with em all

I put them in a folder with Artist-Song Name.mp3 and another one with Song Name-Artist.mp3. Although it takes double space but it's very fast to search.

the other day i was looking through my collection and wondering how the hell ricky martin got in there. i bet in the wonderful days before i realized what kazaa can do to you that an insidious p2p virus automatically updated my collection with the wonderful musings of "she bangs"

but, my collection, which I can't see how *anyone* can do it anyway else (read: my way is better...heh)

artist name folder (last, first)
- song ( artist[last,first] - song title ) *all* lowercase

in the event of covers and live and acoustic versions, use -example- (live, acoustic) after song name.

but, alas, i doubt anyone sees the brilliance of what i do. (and besides, i only have about 1600 total, so my way isn't too out of control)

--to pee or not to pee, on celine dion's cd....that is the question

ps - i also had a girlfriend toss something out that she didn't like, but it wasn't celine dion, it was me
