Best way to mic a flute ?

If anyone has experience ... what's the best way to mic a flutist
playing along side a rock band with amplified guitars

Without a mic, the flute is too quiet ... gig is in an old movie theater (pretty big)


Tried a vocal mic ... didn't work that great


Condenser mic ... ?

Would a clip on mic work ?

I think you can get a mic for the flute.

Asked a guy in a music store and he didn't know for sure ...

so I doubt there are special flute mics

google. Lots of the jazz bands i listen to use them (if they ar mic'ed at all).

looks like you're right .. googled myself

Hmm.. stupid music store guy didn't know (but it was a guitar, drums, keyboards type)

Might have to find a store with more jazz instruments.

Wish I could help more. I'm more of a reproduction guy instead of recording.

A condenser mic will work as well, provided you can get the flutist (yes that is a word) to hold still and keep the flute in the mic's sweet spot. Clip-ons are definitely easier though.

Also try to position the flutist away from other sound sources on stage (in the center, in front of the drum wall) and have the musicians with amped instruments point the amps toward the sides of the stage.

I searched flute mic on google and found some stuff. Seems pretty pricey though. How important is the flutist in your group?

Not hugely important to spend alot of money

The flute player isn't actually in the band, she's just playing on one song

Mainly thinking of something that will work
that someone around probably already has ... like a condenser mic
