Best way to measure/benchmark PC performance?

My office has some aging systems from early 2003+ running on Pentium4's mostly. I'd like to do a refresh but need to be able to justify that upgrading will help improve productivity from new hardware.

We have 4 different generations of dell workstations (dating back to Optiplex GX240s) that I'd like to compare amongst the other types of workstations with specific tasks/applications.

Other than performing a time measurement, whats a good way to capture performance data while performing normal business day duties?

Appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks
