Over the next 4 years, doing deposits of 500$ monthly. What would be the best way? Using a compound interest calculator I find I need a return of 10% on average. Anyone have any suggestions?

I am considering Mutual funds, just wondering what other options are out there.

I am planning on using the 30K as a deposit on a rental income property. Four year time line since that is when I will have a a credit card roll off my credit report (which is apparently holding my credit score under 700). Any suggestions?

If I understand it right, you want your $500 deposits to compound into 30k. The best way to do that is to find a no load mutual fund you think can achieve the 10% average. A low risk way to achieve that would be to find an index that you think will make those gains and find the fund that tracks that specific index. These funds typically have low expense ratios and can be found in the no load variety. I suggest you stick with a mutual fund because if choose another vehicle like a stock, bond, or etf, the comissions will eat 1 to 2% of the monthly deposits.

S&P 500 index fund is as close as you get to a sure thing for 10%, but only over longer time frames than 4 years.

With just 4 years, there's risk that you'll be in a slow period and earn less. If you'd bought before the dot-com crash you'd have earned close to 0% over 4 years (but been way ahead of the people who lost 90% betting on tech).

There is no 100% safe bet that will earn you more than about 5%.

5% can be done almost for sure with little risk, you'll be off by about 3500. It depends on the risk you want to assume.

pick 5-10 stocks for higher risk and higher return. mutual funds will not return 10% in the next 4 years. you are better off "investing" (aka betting) on futures.

or you can leverage up on ETFs if you can find a broker with very low commissions. mix with carefully selling covered calls and you can achieve 10%/year.

The answer depends on how adventurous you are. I've been getting around 33% on my stocks, but I invest in risky small caps.

One of my mutual fund has gained 26% p.a for the last 3 years and 17% p.a for the last 5 years. Moderate risk stock fund investing the Finnish stock market...
