i am trying to learn guitar, without a guitar teacher ( i dont feel like paying someone for something i can learn myself), and i am really confused as to where to start... ive been tabbing a lot of stuff, learning a couple chords, barre chords, but basically just tabbing songs i like. is this the best way to do it? just tab and get good?

no, get lessons so the teacher can teach you some music theory, it will help you a lot more in the long run. playing from tabs gets you comfortable playing guitar if you're just starting out but won't make you good. seriously think about taking lessons, i started taking lessons 3 years ago and have learned a ton more than i ever could have trying to teach myself.

Depending on what kind of music you want to play, there are a number of techniques, styles, and even the proper holding position (in the case of classical guitar). You should at least get the basics from an instructor, preferably one that follows a specific "method."

Using an instructor also tends to enforce some playing discipline and reduces the number of bad habits you'll have to break later on when you are trying to progress. Instructors can also help you get around some limitations (like a five fret pinky stretch) by showing you alternate ways to accomplish the same sound without hurting yourself.

Even if you do a group class you'll progress faster, and have other people at your same level to play with.
