best way to keep printable cds from smearing

I use a spray I bought at Home Depot, problem is it's very hard to get a nice even coat and the disc comes out looking spotty. I found a disc laminator, but it was over 2,500 dollars. Anyone here have experince with coating printable media so the colors don't run?

 
Over at VideoHelp.com there are quite a few threads about this.

I think most people get good results using a simple Krylon Clear-Coat Matte finish spray.
