my roommates dog is a barking machine, especially when guests come over, even if its my g/f who comes over everyday...

the dog is better when its just me around because she knows i get much more pissed then my roommate does...

eventually the only thing that seems to work is giving up and giving it peanut butter to distract her...cant really not do that because if we dont give it to her, she just barks even more and then those guests dont come back

I was going to say a 12 gauge shotgun, but that works too .

well i mean peanut butter works while the dog has it, but as soon as she is done she comes back and barks at the guest again

spray water at it with a spray bottle whenever it barks. soon it'll learn not to.

spray water to her face i mean. won't do much if you spray at her body or something.

shock collar

Seconded...

Seriously, I have a friend whose dog would bark a lot and the neighbors would get mad...plus it's rude when your dog barks at everyone who comes over. It knows that it can't bark when the collar is on, and it used to bark like crazy when the collar was off (smart enough to realize the collar caused the shock). So then if the dog continued to bark after they warned it to be quiet, it would get the collar on. Eventually the dog learned that if it didn't shut up when told to, it would get the collar on and then couldn't bark at all.

To be honest, you can't change a dog's personality. I've got a trouble dog too and nothing works. He's just the way he is and you can't force him to change. A shock collar does work temporarily but it's not a solution as he'll only get pissed off about it later. I just lock him up in another room and that kills the bark noise in half.

i bet he's gotten too much positive reinforcement for his behaviors in the past..whether u knew u were doing it or not. needs to be consistently taught that he will not get attention if he barks. alone time in a laundry room or something migth be in order. might be muzzles that prevent barking, i dunno.

I learned this from taking my dog to obedience training.

Make sure the dog has a collar on
and during the times when you know she will bark
keep a long lead on her (let her drag it around)
but be sure that you can get to the end of it quickly.

As soon as she starts to bark, give the lead/leash a quick but firm jerk
sort of like a snap that will not be so hard that it will hurt her, but will snap
enough to get her attention and distract her.

At the same time you do this, you must give a stern verbal command of "QUIET"!

Keep doing this consistently and your problem should be solved. If she is older and has been
doing this for a while, it will take some time and patience to do, but if you keep at it you will
see the difference.

This is a behavior modification training used on all types of K-9 training to reverse any type of negative
behavior.

DO NOT resort to hitting her with newspaper, or yelling at the top of your lungs, or anything intimidating like that. The dog will NOT respond to that type of treatment.

The idea behind the long leash training is that she experiences discomfort immediately every time she barks, but she does not directly relate the discomfort to YOU.

feel free to PM me if you have any questions....good luck!

I disagree, people think this way and give up on dogs all the time.
That's why the animal shelters are so full of unwanted pets.

If people can take the time to learn what to do by reading or just taking the time to
work with the animal ideally at a young age, then they will not end up with a "problem" animal.

Even problem animals can be helped. It takes an owner that is patient and willing to put in the time needed.
Most people either don't care, or have given up and don't want to bother.
