Question stands as the subject...

What's the best way to invest around 20,000-30,000 dollars for the next year or so?

Any good websites to inform myself?

what's your risk aversion?

What time of returns are you looking for?

One year, so you're looking for short term. If you want guarantee, then just do a CD.

For five years I'd say stock index mutual funds or ETFs. For just one year I'd recommend a CD or high-interest savings account like ING Direct.

Do it now.

I'm planning to name my firstborn VFINX but I still wouldn't agree for a short-term investment.

High-interest savings might be better than a CD if you (bdude) aren't too sure about the length. With savings you can take the money out in 10 months or 14 months without the CD's early withdrawal penalties.

Regarding the VFINX: It has had steady growth since ~2000, how does it work when the economy is in a recession? How does it adjust? or does it just follow the trend?

I like ticker RSP. Its a S&P 500 fund, but its equal weight, so that just as many holdings are in Walmarts and Exxon-Mobils as there are in the #500 company.
