best way to install a digital camera under LINUX

whats the best way to get a NIKON CoolPix 885 running under RedHat 7.3 using a USB port?

in general what are good websites to find answers to LINUX ?'s

Generally the first place to look is if there is a HOWTO if you want to learn howto do something.

In your case USB-Digital-Camera-HOWTO is what you are looking for.

I did not install the HOWTOs on the Redhat 7.2 machine I have access to (I can always look online), but they should be in /usr/doc/HOWTO or /usr/share/doc/HOWTO if you have them installed.

I've been working with digicams for the past 7 years and am on my 5th one. Really, the best way to work with them is not to install them at all - use a reader/writer and leave it installed so all you have to do is pop in media. It is much faster and much less prone to error.
