Best way to handle this

Basic background, I work with kids aging out of foster care, we found the money to get a couple of apartments for some of the kids. The idea is to give them a somewhat stable home so they can go to college and or get a job without worrying about were they are going to live. This being paid for by the local govt, in a small town. Enough background unless you need more.

We were not going to have internet access, but some kids feel they need it for school, the director is willing to do this, but it needs to be monitored. The computers will be running Ubuntu, there maybe additional jacks if they have there own laptops.

Can I lock the history in firefox, and look at that or are there better ways to do this, money is a issue after we got the apartments and furnished them, computers are free.

Now keep in mind that many of these kids have sexual abuse issues, so we are looking to provide a safe environment where they feel comfortable. So as is stands now no porn, we asked them to draw the line as to what is acceptable and we could discuss it, they haven't as yet.

Suggestions?

Thanks Todd

Will someone be on premisis? Surely you'll have a local server to monitor things? You could just install "nanny" programs on the systems and have them email or report all the findings to the admin system, and your server will have the nanny program and if something redlights (porn attempts ect) it will notify you. You can also install on system programs

DansGuardian is one written for Ubuntu and easy to use. http://dansguardian.org/ and http://www.pilpi.net/journal/item-985.php and http://www.filter.bz/dansguardian.htm

I'm sure there's more but that's all i had time for atm.

Ask MS for some free copies of Vista (they give free stuff to charities & schools all the time), the parental controls will work great for the kids.
