Best way to go about getting certified MCP, MCTS..etc.

I was offered a job today, but I had to turn it down because I wasn't qualified for it. I know a great deal about computers and networking, but there are quite a few things that are beyond what I can do. For those of you who are certified and are in the industry what are some of the steps I should take in order to get certified? What I would like to do is work in email/exchange server, or networking. Thanks for your help!
